How to write a cover letter for a nursing job in New Zealand
For nursing roles in New Zealand, the person reading your application needs to confirm a few non-negotiables before anything else. Make those easy to find, then show them the nurse behind them.
Put your registration and APC up front
A New Zealand employer needs to see that you’re registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, hold a current Annual Practising Certificate, and what your scope of practice is. Don’t bury this on page two - state it early so the reader can tick the box and keep reading.
If you’re an internationally qualified nurse working toward NZ registration, be clear and honest about exactly where you are in that process.
What charge nurses and ward managers read for
- Safe, competent practice in the clinical area they’re hiring for.
- Teamwork and reliability - they’re staffing a roster, not just filling a seat.
- Cultural safety and working in partnership with Māori and Pasifika patients and whānau.
- Any specific experience the ad names (ED, aged care, mental health, theatre, and so on).
Show one clinical example, briefly
Pick one situation that shows how you practise: the setting, what you did, and the outcome for the patient or team. One well-chosen example carries more weight than a list of duties, and it’s what makes your letter sound like you rather than a template.
Common mistakes
- Leaving registration and APC status unclear, so the reader has to hunt for it.
- A generic letter that could go to any ward - name the service and the setting.
- Listing responsibilities instead of showing judgement and care.
