Terms of Service

Effective 8 August 2026. Plain-English terms that describe the agreement between you and Rolebird.

Who you’re contracting with

Rolebird is operated by Rolebird Limited (a New Zealand company with company number 9447842) trading as “Rolebird” (in these terms also called “we” or “us”). By ticking “I agree” when you sign up, or by creating an account or using the service, you accept these terms and enter a binding agreement with Rolebird; if you do not agree, do not use Rolebird. For legal, billing, privacy, or support matters, contact [email protected]. You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract under New Zealand law to use Rolebird.

Where Rolebird is available

Rolebird is available to people in New Zealand only, and the browser extension is distributed in New Zealand alone. We may decline sign-ups, or close accounts, of users located outside New Zealand, and if we close an account on this basis, we will refund any unspent credits.

What Rolebird is

Rolebird is a browser extension and web app. When you find a job you are interested in, you “capture” it - the extension saves that listing to your Rolebird account. From a CV and base cover letter you upload, Rolebird then produces, for each captured job, a tailored cover letter, a list of suggested CV changes, an ATS screening, and strategy notes. Rolebird also offers a separate interview-practice feature which generates mock interview questions from your CV and the captured job listing and runs a practice session with you. You review, edit, and apply on the job site yourself - Rolebird never submits an application on your behalf, and it never conducts, records for, or communicates with a real employer on your behalf.

Review what it writes before you send it

The letters, CV suggestions, ATS screening, and strategy notes are generated by an AI model, guided to use only what is in your own documents and the job listing - but they are drafts for you to review before use, and AI output is not guaranteed to be accurate, complete, or free of mistakes. Any ATS screening result is indicative only: it is our estimate of how an applicant-tracking system might read your application, not a measure of how any particular employer’s system will actually score it. You are responsible for reading and checking every letter, suggestion, and result before you use it in a real application. Rolebird is a drafting and preparation tool, not a substitute for your own judgement about what you tell an employer, and nothing it produces is a promise or guarantee that you will secure an interview, a job offer, or any other outcome.

Interview practice

The interview-practice feature uses AI to generate mock interview questions from your CV and the job listing you are preparing for, and runs a practice session in which you answer - either typed, or spoken out loud in voice mode. Sessions include a debrief afterwards and can include follow-up questions that react to your answers. The questions, follow-ups, and any debrief or feedback are not guaranteed to be accurate, complete, or representative of what a real employer will ask. It is a rehearsal tool to help you prepare; it does not score or rate your delivery, and it is not a prediction of a real interview or a guarantee of an interview invitation or a job offer.

In voice mode, the interviewer’s questions are spoken and you answer out loud. Your spoken answers are transcribed on your own device using a speech model downloaded from a third-party provider; your audio is never uploaded or stored - only the resulting text is submitted, exactly like a typed answer. To give the interviewer a voice, the text of the questions is sent to Google’s text-to-speech service. Session transcripts and debriefs are stored encrypted, belong to your account, appear in your data export, and are deleted when your account is; your audio is never among them. Full detail on what we retain and for how long is on the Privacy page, which forms part of these terms.

Voice mode needs a desktop browser, microphone permission, and a one-time download of a speech model into your browser (at least ~500 MB, or ~1.6 GB for the recommended model) before your first voice session. Spoken answers run up to about two minutes each. On a phone, or without the download, you type your answers instead.

The first time you use an interview pack, it binds to the job you use it for, because each session’s questions are built from that listing and your CV; a pack can’t be moved to a different job once it has been used. Each pack includes a set number of practice sessions plus one final mock, as shown on the Pricing page; the final mock is taken once.

Your account

Removing your own personal details

Before you upload your CV and base cover letter, you strip your name, contact details, and other personal identifiers - see the Help page for exactly what to remove. Rolebird runs an automated check in your browser before anything is sent to us or our AI provider: the original file never leaves your device, and only the extracted text, as you approve it after that check and your own review, is stored. The automated check refuses documents that still contain government ID numbers; other findings, such as a likely name, are warnings you can accept, and it cannot detect company names or reliably catch exact dates - so you must review the result yourself and generalise or remove anything that could still identify you. Doing this properly is your responsibility, not just the filter’s. Full detail on what we do with what you upload is on the Privacy page, which forms part of these terms.

Runs and credits

Refunds

If a run or interview session does not complete because of a technical error on our side - for example, the system does not return your cover letter, CV change list, ATS screening and strategy notes, or does not run your interview session - the credit is returned to the relevant balance automatically. You do not need to ask, and you can simply try again. This returns a credit to retry; it is not a cash refund.

Once a run has completed and produced its outputs, or an interview session has run, the credit for it has been used - whether or not you are happy with the result. Buying a pack you later decide not to use does not, on its own, entitle you to a refund; the runs stay in your account for you to use.

Where we fail to provide the service you paid for - you were charged in error, or something on our side stopped the service working - get in touch. We will look into it and put it right, and where the fault is ours that includes a refund, in full or in proportion to what went wrong.

Nothing in this section limits any right you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986, which apply regardless of what these terms say.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

We can suspend or close an account that breaches this section, or that we reasonably believe is being used to abuse the service (including scripted or automated abuse of the public forms or sign-in).

Your responsibility for misuse

You agree to reimburse us for any loss, cost, or third-party claim we reasonably incur because you have breached the “Acceptable use” section in these terms or provided content that is unlawful or infringes someone else’s rights. This does not apply to the extent the loss was caused by us, and nothing in it limits any right you have that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Ownership

You own your CV and your cover letter. The content of a job listing you capture belongs to whoever published it, not to you or to us; you give us permission to process it, together with your CV and cover letter - including sending de-identified text to our AI provider, and, for the interview-practice feature, sending the text of your practice questions (which may be derived from your CV) to Google’s text-to-speech service to generate the interviewer’s voice, while your spoken answers are transcribed on your own device and are not sent to us or that service - solely to provide the service to you. We own Rolebird’s software, design, and branding. The letters, CV suggestions, and interview questions generated for your account are yours to use however you like.

We may refuse, remove, or delete anything you upload that we reasonably believe breaches these terms or the law.

Our site content

The guides, research reports, and other written content published on rolebird.net are copyright Rolebird. You may read, link to, and quote them for non-commercial purposes with attribution. You may not systematically copy or scrape them, republish them elsewhere, or use them to train or fine-tune a model, without our written permission.

No guaranteed uptime

We aim to keep Rolebird available and fast, but we don’t guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service. We’re not liable for a job you missed out on, or a deadline you couldn’t meet, because the service was slow, unavailable, or produced a draft you had to fix by hand.

Except for the guarantees you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and other laws that cannot be excluded, Rolebird is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all other warranties, conditions, representations, and terms - whether implied by statute, common law, or otherwise - including any implied term that the service will meet your particular needs, be uninterrupted or error-free, or produce any particular result.

Rolebird relies on third-party services to work, including our AI provider, Google’s text-to-speech service, and a speech model you download from a third-party provider for voice mode. We are not responsible for those services being unavailable, changing, or being withdrawn, or for the third-party speech-model download or how it behaves on your device.

We may change, add to, suspend, or withdraw the service or any of its features (including the interview-practice feature) at any time. Where a change is significant we’ll aim to let you know, and if we permanently withdraw a paid feature while you still hold credits for it, we’ll refund the unused credits for that feature.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for all claims arising from or in connection with your use of Rolebird - whether in contract, tort (including negligence), under statute, or otherwise - is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you have paid us, or (b) NZ$100. We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss of profits, loss of opportunity (such as a job offer you believe you missed out on), loss of anticipated savings, loss of data, or loss of goodwill, whether direct or indirect. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits anything that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the Fair Trading Act 1986, and the Privacy Act 2020.

Ending this agreement

You can stop using Rolebird and delete your account at any time from your account page - see the Privacy page for what deletion actually does. Deleting your account gives up any unspent credits; they are not refunded. We can suspend or end your access for breach of these terms, suspected abuse, or where a payment is reversed, charged back, or otherwise fails after credits have been granted, and we’ll tell you why if we do; a suspension freezes your credit balance rather than refunding it.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service changes. We’ll change the effective date above when we do; continuing to use Rolebird after an update means you accept the new terms. If a change is significant, we’ll also email you before it takes effect. No change will reduce the number or value of credits you have already purchased, or the terms that applied when you bought them.

We may change our prices from time to time. A price change applies only to purchases you make after it takes effect - it never changes the number or value of credits you have already bought.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and any dispute is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
