Accounting & finance

How to write a cover letter for an accounting job in New Zealand

Accounting hires in New Zealand turn on a few concrete signals: where you are with your qualification, which systems you know, and whether you can be trusted with deadlines. Make those obvious.

Signal your qualification and your systems early

Say clearly whether you’re a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), hold a CPA, or are studying toward one - and how far through you are. It’s one of the first things a NZ finance team or firm looks for.

Then name your software. Xero is everywhere in New Zealand; MYOB and the larger ERPs matter for bigger employers. If the ad names a system you know, say so plainly.

What NZ firms and finance teams read for

  • Accuracy and attention to detail - with a concrete example, not just the words.
  • Meeting deadlines under pressure (month-end, year-end, tax dates).
  • Communication - explaining numbers to people who aren’t accountants.
  • The specific area in the ad: audit, tax, management accounting, accounts payable.

Keep the structure tight

  • Opening: the role and why this firm or team.
  • Evidence: one example that shows accuracy or ownership of a process end to end.
  • Systems and qualification: stated cleanly so they’re easy to find.
  • Close: availability and right to work in New Zealand if relevant.

Common mistakes

  • Being vague about qualification progress - employers read vagueness as “not far”.
  • Forgetting to mention the software the ad specifically asks for.
  • A letter with no numbers in it, from someone whose job is numbers.
